EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured engraving, titled "Paris Kills Achilles or Paride diretto da Apollo Ferince Achille" transports us back to the ancient world of Greek mythology. Created by Luigi Ademollo in 1832, this illustration is part of a collection from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The scene depicted here captures a pivotal moment in the Trojan War. Paris, the son of King Priam of Troy and infamous for eloping with Helen, queen of Sparta, confronts Achilles on the battlefield. Armed with his bow and arrow, Paris aims at Achilles' vulnerable heel - his only weakness. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of the enduring power and influence of classical mythology. The clash between these two legendary figures symbolizes not only their personal conflict but also larger themes such as fate, heroism, and vulnerability. Ademollo's meticulous attention to detail brings this mythological encounter to life. The soldiers surrounding them add intensity to the atmosphere as they witness this fateful confrontation unfold before their eyes. Through its vibrant colors and masterful composition, this artwork invites us to delve into an ancient tale that continues to resonate today. It serves as a reminder that even heroes can have weaknesses – an idea immortalized in our language through the phrase "Achilles heel". This exquisite print is truly a testament to both artistic skill and timeless storytelling.
