Kurd. Armenian, 1862. Creator: Frants Taikhel

Kurd. Armenian, 1862. Sheet 16 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Frants Taikhel in 1862, showcases a Kurdish-Armenian man from the Caucasus region of the Russian Empire. The image is part of the ethnographic album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," or "Ethnographic Description of the Peoples of Russia," published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. Dedicated to Tsar Alexander II, this two-volume work aimed to document the diverse ethnic groups inhabiting the empire in celebration of its one thousandth anniversary. Volume 1 of the album consists of 62 color illustrations, including this one, depicting various ethnic groups in their traditional attire. The album also includes a fold-out table detailing the size of each group's population in major cities and an ethnographic map, color-coded to represent the distribution of different ethnicities across the empire. Frants Taikhel, a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia, was the creator of this photograph. His work, along with the essays in Volume 2 of the album, reflects the state of anthropological and historical knowledge during the 1860s. The album provides a valuable record of the rich cultural diversity that existed within the Russian Empire during this period, offering a glimpse into the lives and traditions of its many peoples. This photograph of the Kurdish-Armenian man, with his distinctive headwear and intricately patterned coat, offers a fascinating window into the past, showcasing the unique identity and heritage of one of the many ethnic groups that once called the Russian Empire home.
