Long Shawl with Black Center and Exotic Four-Sided Gallery in Chinoiserie Style, 1840s
Long Shawl with Black Center and Exotic Four-Sided Gallery in Chinoiserie Style, 1840s. This expensive woven shawl has been refreshed--that is, its outdated designs have been replaced with beautiful new decoration. Overlapping pairs of botehs, or paisleys, enliven the original end panels (pallava) whereas the area around the central black rectangle was updated with an exotic four-sided gallery featuring ships, buildings, and flags that suggest Chinese influence. This stunning shawl is composed of seven almost invisibly joined pieces. One large section contains both ends and the continuous side borders while six pieces create the space in the middle. When the shawl was refreshed with the new chic gallery, black pigment--hardly visible--was applied along the edges of the central black section. The inscription may identify the textiles quality or material content

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Long Shawl with Black Center and Exotic Four-Sided Gallery in Chinoiserie Style, dating back to the 1840s. This exquisite woven shawl has undergone a refreshing transformation, replacing its outdated designs with stunning new decoration. The original end panels now feature overlapping pairs of botehs or paisleys, adding vibrancy to the piece. Meanwhile, the central black rectangle has been updated with an exotic four-sided gallery that depicts ships, buildings, and flags evoking Chinese influence. What makes this shawl truly remarkable is its composition of seven seamlessly joined pieces. One large section encompasses both ends and continuous side borders while six smaller pieces create the space in between. During the revitalization process, black pigment was subtly applied along the edges of the central black section for added depth and elegance. The inscription on this textile may provide information about its quality or material content but remains unknown to us today. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this heritage artwork hails from India's Kashmir region—a testament to their rich textile traditions. Through this print captured by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, we can admire not only the skillful craftsmanship behind this refreshed shawl but also appreciate how it beautifully blends cultural influences from different corners of the world into one breathtaking piece of art.
