Southern Party 1912, (1913). Artist: Frank Debenham
Southern Party 1912, (1913). Chief steward W Archer, steward FJ Hooper, biologist Edward Nelson, surgeon Edward Atkinson, zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard, stoker William Lashly, petty officer Tom Crean, ski expert Tryggve Gran, petty officers Thomas Williamson and Patrick Keohane, physicist Charles Wright, dog handler Dmitrii Girev. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Southern Party 1912, (1913) - A Glimpse into the Final Expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the Southern Party of 1912, a group of brave explorers who embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The image showcases the diverse team members who joined this historic journey to the South Pole. Among them are Chief steward W Archer, steward FJ Hooper, biologist Edward Nelson, surgeon Edward Atkinson, zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard, stoker William Lashly, petty officer Tom Crean, ski expert Tryggve Gran, petty officers Thomas Williamson and Patrick Keohane. Also present were physicist Charles Wright and dog handler Dmitrii Girev. Scott's expedition aimed not only to reach the geographic South Pole but also to continue vital scientific research in Antarctica. However, upon their arrival at their long-awaited destination on 17 January 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and dwindling supplies due to blizzards along their way; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already reached it a month earlier. Tragically delayed by adverse weather conditions and running out of provisions during their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team members succumbed to exhaustion and extreme cold at the end of March. Their bodies were eventually found eight months later alongside poignant diaries that documented their valiant struggle for survival. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to these courageous men who pushed themselves beyond human limits in pursuit of scientific knowledge and exploration in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments. It stands as a reminder of both triumphs achieved against all odds and sacrifices made for future generations' understanding of our world's vast wildernesses.
