EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two intriguing reptiles native to North Africa: the Algerian cylindrical skink (Chalcides chalcides) and the four-toed worm lizard (Bipes canaliculatus). The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The Algerian cylindrical skink, also known as Hippolyte's skink, is a slender, cylindrical lizard with a smooth, shiny, and uniformly colored body. They are typically found in the Mediterranean region, from Morocco to Tunisia, and are known for their ability to roll into a tight ball when threatened. The four-toed worm lizard, or Bipes canaliculatus, is a unique and elongated reptile, with a flattened body and four toes on each foot. They are often found in sandy or gravelly habitats, and are expert burrowers, using their long, muscular tails to dig into the ground. This beautiful engraving, illustrated by J.G. Pretre and engraved by Massard under the direction of Turpin, showcases the intricate details and vibrant colors of these fascinating reptiles. The use of the stipple engraving technique adds depth and texture to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
