Arguing the Point: A Trenchside Discussion Somewhere in France, 1916. In this evocative image, two soldiers, identified as Acting Sergeant Herbert Gibson (Service Number 386202) of the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, engage in a passionate debate amidst the muddy trenches of the Western Front during World War I. The reverse of the photograph bears a heartfelt inscription, "Dearest Cis, Just a few lines hoping you are well. Enclosed you will find PPC which I hope you will like. I am still in. Card entitled 1. See 4512 for card entitled 2 and continuation of text." Gibson, born in September 1889, was likely writing to his loved one, expressing his longing and sending a postcard as a token of affection.
