EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken at the Proof and Experimental Establishment (PEE) on Foulness Island, Essex, UK, in 1968, we find two groundbreaking British aircraft sharing the same space. The foreground is dominated by the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) TSR.2 prototype, a twin-engined, variable geometry wing, supersonic maritime strike and reconnaissance aircraft. Its sleek design and innovative features were intended to provide the Royal Air Force with a formidable capability to counter the Soviet Navy's growing threat. Behind the TSR.2, nestled among the trees, is one of the two Bristol 188 prototypes, XF926. The Bristol 188 was a supersonic transport aircraft project, which aimed to challenge American dominance in the supersonic passenger jet market. The aircraft's distinctive shape and large size are evident in this image, making a striking contrast to the more stealthy TSR.2. The photograph captures a moment of history, as these two pioneering British aircraft undergo testing and experimentation at the Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment (RARDE) in Shoeburyness. The peaceful coexistence of these two prototypes in the same frame serves as a testament to the groundbreaking research and development taking place in the UK during this era. The photograph's composition offers a unique external view of the aircraft, allowing us to appreciate their intricate designs and engineering details. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to the late 1960s, a time when the future of aviation was being shaped by the relentless pursuit of innovation and progress.
