The date is November 1899, and the location is the Modder River in South Africa, a strategic point in the ongoing conflict between the British Empire and the Boer Republics. The British, led by General Lord Methuen, had been advancing towards the Transvaal capital, Pretoria, when they were met with unexpected resistance at the Modder River.
