EDITORS COMMENTS
In this portrait, Count Bartolomeo Bergami (circa 1780-1832) is depicted in the prime of his life, exuding an air of sophistication and charm. Born in Italy, Bergami rose to prominence as a courier, serving the elite circles of European society. Among his most notable patrons was Caroline of Brunswick, the fiery and independent wife of the future King George IV of England. Their relationship, which began in the early 1800s, was a scandalous affair that would shake the foundations of the British monarchy. Caroline, known for her beauty, wit, and strong-willed nature, was a favorite of the Prince of Wales, who was then heir to the throne. Bergami, with his Italian charm and impeccable manners, became her constant companion, accompanying her on extravagant trips across Europe and fueling rumors of an illicit love affair. Their relationship came to a head in 1814, when Caroline was put on trial for adultery, with Bergami being a key witness against her. The trial, which was a sensation in the press, exposed the inner workings of the royal court and the complex web of relationships that existed within it. Despite the scandal, Caroline was acquitted, but her reputation was forever tarnished. Bergami, who continued to serve the Prince of Wales until his death in 1820, went on to live a long and intriguing life, eventually settling in France and becoming a prominent figure in Parisian society. This evocative portrait, which captures the essence of a bygone era, serves as a reminder of the passionate and often scandalous relationships that shaped the history of the European monarchy.
