EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the haunting ruins of the once formidable fort at Cham Berum, Maydos, in the Dardanelles region of Turkey. Built during the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th century, this coastal fortification played a significant role in the defensive strategy of the Ottoman forces during the First World War. The Dardanelles Campaign, also known as the Gallipoli Campaign, was a major military operation launched by the Allies in 1915 with the ultimate goal of securing a sea route to Russia and preventing the Central Powers from using the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles to move troops and supplies between the European and Asian theaters of war. The fort at Cham Berum, also known as Cham Kalessi or Berum Castle, was a key strategic position for the Ottoman forces. Its demolition in 1923 marked the end of an era, symbolizing the waning power of the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of modern Turkey under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The ruins of the fort now stand as a testament to the rich history of the region and the profound impact of the First World War on the geopolitical landscape of the Mediterranean. This photograph, taken in the 1920s, offers a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the transience of human constructions. The crumbling walls, the scattered debris, and the desolate landscape evoke a sense of melancholy and loss, while also inviting reflection on the enduring legacy of war and its impact on the human experience.
