This evocative photograph captures the young face of Claude George Headley, a drummer boy serving in the East Lancashire Regiment during the 1920s. The image, taken in Malta in 1925, is one of five known copies of this portrait. Claude George Headley was born in 1881, making him around 44 years old when this photograph was taken. Despite his age, he is depicted here in the uniform of a drummer boy, suggesting that he may have joined the regiment at an earlier age or been a replacement drummer. The East Lancashire Regiment, also known as the "Lancashire Fusiliers," was a renowned infantry regiment of the British Army, with a rich history dating back to the late 17th century. The photograph shows Headley gazing intently off-camera, his expression serious yet determined. He wears the distinctive red fez hat and white drummer's jacket of the East Lancashire Regiment, adorned with various insignia and badges.
