EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Flight Lieutenant Kenneth Harold Francis Letford, DFC and DSO, is seen in the Illustrated London News from 1949, proudly displaying the bar added to his Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his acts of gallantry during the rescue mission of HMS Amethyst in the treacherous waters of the River Yangtse. Letford's distinguished military career began during World War II, where he earned his first decoration, the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), for his exceptional service in the Royal Air Force. The photograph captures Letford in his flight uniform, wearing the ribbons of both his DFC and DSO medals, with the bar of the DFC prominently displayed on his left chest. The backdrop of the image is a simple, muted background, drawing all attention to Letford and his achievements. The event that led to Letford's second DFC award took place in 1949, when HMS Amethyst, a British naval vessel, was under attack and stranded in the Yangtse River. Letford, who was a pilot at the time, bravely flew numerous sorties over the area, providing cover for the beleaguered ship and its crew. His actions were instrumental in the successful evacuation of the crew and the eventual rescue of HMS Amethyst. This photograph is a testament to Letford's unwavering bravery and dedication to duty. It is a significant historical image that showcases the heroism and resilience of the men and women who served in the military during the 1940s. The photograph is a valuable addition to any collection of military history or aviation memorabilia.
