EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting 15th-century illuminated manuscript page, hailing from the Codex of Predis housed in the Royal Library of Turin, Italy, captures a pivotal moment in Christian history. The scene depicts the guards who were stationed outside the sepulcher of Jesus, charged with safeguarding His tomb, falling back in fright. This astonishing event is described in the New Testament of the Bible (Matthew 27:65, Mark 15:45, and Matthew 28:4), where the guards are said to have been kept in a state of awe and trembling after witnessing the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The intricately detailed miniature painting, a testament to the artistic prowess of the Renaissance era, showcases a group of Catholic guards, clad in armor and helmets, recoiling in terror as an angel, bathed in ethereal light, descends from the heavens. The angel, with wings outstretched and a serene expression, holds a long cross in one hand and a banner bearing the Latin inscription "Mortuus est et vivit" (He is dead and alive) in the other. The Codex of Predis, created in the late 1470s by the renowned Italian illuminator Cristoforo di Geremia, is a remarkable example of the rich artistic and religious heritage of the Middle Ages. This image not only serves as a visual representation of the resurrection narrative but also stands as a testament to the profound impact of the Christian faith on European art and culture.
