EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting watercolor sketch, painted by Henrietta Grace Baden Powell (nee Smyth) in the early 1850s, captures a cozy and intimate moment in the home of Reverend Baden Powell and his family at New College Lane in Oxford. The Reverend, who married Henrietta in 1846, sits at a comfortable writing desk, engrossed in his work, while his wife and their five children gather around him. Among the children are George Smyth Powell and Henry Warrington Smyth Powell, who would later become significant figures in their own right. The room is filled with Victorian-era furniture and domestic comforts, including a large table with a tablecloth and windows adorned with curtains. The atmosphere is one of middle-class respectability and contentment, reflecting the values and social class of the time. This image holds special association for the Scout Movement, as Reverend Baden Powell is the founder of the Scouts, having established the Boy Scouts Association in 1907 and the Girl Guides in 1910. The scene of a loving family gathered around their father, with the children looking up to him for guidance and instruction, is a fitting reminder of the role models and values that Baden Powell sought to instill in the young people who became part of the Scouting movement. Henrietta's skillful brushstrokes bring the room to life, capturing the warmth and comfort of a Victorian home, and offering a glimpse into the personal life of a man who would go on to become a beloved and influential figure in British history.
