Occupying an island site with principal elevations to Charing Cross Road and Cranbourn Street, it contains, in addition to the theatre, ground-floor shops on the main frontages, with Cranbourn Mansions in the upper storeys. It was designed by Frank Matcham for Moss Empires and built for 250, 000 as a hippodrome for circus and variety performances. The venue gave its first show on 15 January 1900.. Date: circa 1902
