The London Hippodrome

Promotional postcard for The London Hippodrome, which was opened in 1900. Occupying an island site with principal elevations to Charing Cross Road and Cranbourn Street, it contains, in addition to the theatre, ground-floor shops on the main frontages, with Cranbourn Mansions in the upper storeys. It was designed by Frank Matcham for Moss Empires and built for 250, 000 as a hippodrome for circus and variety performances. The venue gave its first show on 15 January 1900.. Date: circa 1902
