EDITORS COMMENTS
This panoramic map, titled "Where the fate of mankind may be decided: a panoramic map of the Egyptian coast and the Libyan plateau," was created by G.H. Davis in 1940. The map provides a bird's eye view of the North African coastal region, stretching from Sollum and Sidi El Barrani in Libya to Alexandria in Egypt. At the time this map was created, the Mediterranean coast of Egypt and Libya was the theater of war in the Middle East during World War II. The Italian army, under the command of General Italo Gariboldi, had launched a thrust along the coastline in the direction of Mersa Matruh and Alexandria. The Italian advance was a significant challenge to the Allied forces, who were determined to prevent the Axis powers from gaining a foothold in Egypt and threatening the Suez Canal, a vital strategic asset for the Allies. The map offers a comprehensive view of the terrain, with detailed topographical features, roads, and bodies of water. The Egyptian coastline is dotted with small settlements and fortifications, while the Libyan plateau stretches inland, marked by sand dunes and rocky outcroppings. The Mediterranean Sea is visible in the background, with several ships anchored off the coast. The map's title reflects the significance of the region during the war, with the fate of mankind seemingly hanging in the balance. The map is a valuable historical document, providing insight into the strategic importance of the North African coast during World War II and the Italian thrust towards Egypt and Alexandria.
