In this illustration from the early 20th century, we witness a breathtaking scene of extinct marine creatures coexisting in the Niobrara Sea of North America during the late Cretaceous period. At the center, a Mosasaur, an extinct, snakelike marine reptile, glides gracefully through the water. Mosasaurs were likely the giant sea monitor lizards of their time, reaching lengths of up to 50 feet. To the left, a Pterosaur, specifically a Pteranodon, takes flight above the water. Pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to evolve powered flight, with wings formed by a skin membrane stretched between their elongated fingers. At the right side of the illustration, a sea turtle basks in the sun. Sea turtles are a diverse group of reptiles that have adapted to life in the marine environment.
