EDITORS COMMENTS
In this illustration from the early 20th century, we witness a breathtaking scene of extinct marine creatures coexisting in the Niobrara Sea of North America during the late Cretaceous period. At the center, a Mosasaur, an extinct, snakelike marine reptile, glides gracefully through the water. Mosasaurs were likely the giant sea monitor lizards of their time, reaching lengths of up to 50 feet. To the left, a Pterosaur, specifically a Pteranodon, takes flight above the water. Pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to evolve powered flight, with wings formed by a skin membrane stretched between their elongated fingers. At the right side of the illustration, a sea turtle basks in the sun. Sea turtles are a diverse group of reptiles that have adapted to life in the marine environment. This illustration, taken from Wilhelm Bolsche's "Prehistoric Life," published in 1932 by Georg Dollheimer in Leipzig, Germany, offers a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric world. The scene is reminiscent of a swampy, tropical environment, with lush vegetation and a crocodile lurking in the background. The Mosasaur's predatory nature is evident in its toothy grin, while the Pteranodon's sharp beak and the sea turtle's protective shell underscore the diverse range of adaptations that emerged during the Triassic period. This illustration serves as a testament to the rich history of zoology, paleontology, and the human curiosity that drives us to explore the wonders of prehistory.
