This print depicts three female Alphonsist vivandieres, each representing different regiments, in the aftermath of the Bourbon monarchy's restoration under King Alphonso XII in Spain, in 1875. The Alphonsists, also known as the Monarchists or the Isabellines, were supporters of the Bourbon dynasty and opposed the Carlists, who claimed the throne for Carlos VII. The vivandieres, female soldiers who provided logistical support to the troops, are shown in their distinctive uniforms, adorned with the colors and insignia of their respective regiments. Their determined expressions and poised postures reflect their unwavering loyalty to the Bourbon cause. The sketches offer a rare glimpse into the role of women in the Spanish Civil Wars, as they defied societal norms to fight for their beliefs and support their men on the battlefield.
