EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the final scene of a Dervish dance from the Rifai order, a Sufi Islamic mystical brotherhood. The Dervishes, penitents of the order, are shown in a state of ecstasy, their faces contorted in rapture as they grasp red-hot scimitars. The scimitars, symbolizing the trials and hardships of the spiritual journey, are plunged into the flames before being passed among the Dervishes. The sheikh, the spiritual leader of the order, is seen treating the wounds of the Dervishes with a cooling balm, signifying the healing and forgiveness that comes from the divine. The Dervishes, followers of Shaikh Ahmed er-Rifai, are dressed in traditional garb, including long, flowing robes and felt hats adorned with tassels. Their faces are veiled, a sign of their devotion and commitment to the path of spiritual enlightenment. This hand-colored copperplate engraving is a beautiful example of the intricate and detailed illustrations found in Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1842. The image was copied from Ignace Mouradgea d'Ohsson's "Tableau General de L'Empire Ottoman," published in Paris in 1790. The illustration offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural traditions of the Ottoman Empire and the Islamic world.
