EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, taken by renowned illustrator Hynes in 1927, offers a glimpse into the lively and fashionable nightlife scene at The Florida Club in South Bruton Mews, London. The club, famous for its innovative glass dance floor, had triggered a trend in other clubs around the city and beyond. At the top left of the image, we find Captain J. Drummond, the club's secretary, dressed in his military uniform and engrossed in conversation with an unidentified gentleman. Below and to the right, we see Quagline, the maitre d', whose distinctive appearance and welcoming demeanor made him a familiar and beloved figure at The Florida Club. Quagline's attention is split between greeting diners and ensuring the smooth running of the evening. Toothpick, wearing a distinctive fez, can be seen at the bottom right of the image. He is dispensing cafurk, a traditional Turkish coffee, and engaging in a lively palm-reading session with an intrigued lady. Toothpick's Oriental friend Abdullah, with a cigar in hand and a book in the other, adds to the exotic and alluring atmosphere of the club. The diners in the background, dressed in the height of 1920s fashion, are lost in the moment, dancing on the glass dance floor or engaged in animated conversations. The smoky, dimly lit atmosphere, filled with the sounds of jazz and laughter, creates an intoxicating and unforgettable experience. The Florida Club was truly a unique and entertaining nightspot for London's fashionable society in the 1920s.
