EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a proud Golden Spangled Hamburgh cock and hen, two prized poultry specimens from the Victorian era. The Golden Spangled Hamburgh, also known as the Malay or Rev. Brookes Fowl, is a domestic breed with an exotic appearance, characterized by its iridescent, golden-green plumage. This particular pair was exhibited at various poultry shows during the late 19th century. The cock was shown at the Crystal Palace in Birmingham in 1871, while the hen was exhibited at Kendal, Whitehouse and Spalding in 1871 and Dublin in 1872. The image, created by Vincent Brooks Day & Son after an illustration by J.W. Ludlow, is taken from Lewis Wright's "The Illustrated Book of Poultry," published by Cassell in London in 1890. The Victorian era saw a craze for breeding and exhibiting rare and exotic poultry, with ornithology and game birds being popular subjects of study and competition. The intricate plumage of the Golden Spangled Hamburgh cock and hen would have been a sight to behold at these shows, drawing admiration and envy from fellow exhibitors and spectators alike. Despite their ornamental value, it is important to note that the practice of cockfighting, which was once a popular pastime among the upper classes, contributed to the breeding and exhibition of such birds. The fever for these birds reached its peak during the 18th and 19th centuries, with many breeders and exhibitors striving to create the most visually impressive and distinctive varieties. Today, the Golden Spangled Hamburgh remains a rare and beautiful breed, a testament to the rich history of poultry keeping and the enduring fascination with the natural world.
