EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali (Dictionary of Natural Sciences) in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases three intriguing crab species: the common hermit crab (Pagurus bernhardus, also known as Paguro bernhardus and Paguro angoloso), the hermit crab in shell (Pagurus excavatus, also known as Paguro excavatus and Paguro bernardo), and the coconut crab (Birgus latro, also known as Birgo ladro). The common hermit crab is depicted on the left, its slender body and long, curved claws making it easily recognizable. The hermit crab in shell is shown in the middle, nestled inside a large, conical shell. The coconut crab, the largest living land-living arthropod, is illustrated on the right, with its powerful claws and distinctive red eyes. The background of the engraving features various roots and vegetation, including Wachendorfia thyrsiflora, a plant native to South Africa, and the red fruit of Wachendorfia en, also known as Thyrsiflora wachendorfia or Thyrsiflora occidentalis. The intricate details of the crabs' exoskeletons and the delicate shading of the engraving highlight the skillful craftsmanship of the illustrators, Jean Gabriel Pretre and Corsi, and the publisher, Batelli e Figli. The Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali was a comprehensive work on natural history, botany, and zoology, and this engraving is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized the publication. The inclusion of both common and hermit crabs, as well as the coconut crab, reflects the broad scope of the work and the interest in the natural world during the 19th century.
