EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from a Persian manuscript, the Islamic adventurer known as the Mahdi is depicted in deep meditation within the recesses of a cave. The Mahdi, or the "Guided One," is a figure of great significance in Islamic eschatology, believed to be the rightly-guided caliph who will bring peace and justice to the world before the Day of Judgment. The Mahdi is shown here dressed in the traditional attire of a Sufi mystic, with a long robe and a turban adorned with a fez. His serene expression and closed eyes suggest a profound connection to the divine, as he seeks guidance and enlightenment in the secluded and sacred space of the cave. The image is a hand-colored copperplate engraving by L. Giarre after Giulio Ferrario, taken from his "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1842. The illustration is based on an earlier work by Ignace Mouradgea d'Ohsson, "Tableau General de L'Empire Ottoman," published in Paris in 1790. The Mahdi's presence in this illustration is a testament to the rich and complex history of Islamic culture, which has been shaped by the teachings of great imams and scholars such as Abu Hanifa, Al-Shafi'i, Malik, Ibn Anas, Hanbal, and others. The Quattro Iman, or the Four Imams, are considered the founders of the major schools of Islamic jurisprudence, which continue to guide the religious and legal practices of Muslims around the world. This evocative image invites us to reflect on the enduring legacy of Islamic spirituality and the quest for knowledge and enlightenment that has characterized the Islamic tradition throughout history.
