EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured aquatint engraving captures a moment from Queen Victoria's coronation parade on June 28, 1838, as Sir Charles Lamb, the Knight Marshal, rides proudly on horseback at the head of ranks of Marshalmen. Dressed in their distinctive scarlet coats, blue trousers, and shakos, the Marshalmen form a disciplined line, their faces expressionless as they gaze straight ahead. Sir Charles Lamb, a prominent figure in the Hanoverian aristocracy, was responsible for ensuring the orderly progression of the coronation procession. Behind the Marshalmen, a panorama of pomp and ceremony unfolds. Nobles in elegant carriages and ornate coaches follow in procession, their finery a testament to the grandeur of the occasion. Among them, a Minister and a Baron can be seen, their importance signified by the elaborate headdresses and robes they wear. In the distance, the figure of Baron Munchausen, a popular character from folklore, adds a touch of whimsy to the proceedings. Published by Fores, Sporting and Fine Print Repository in Piccadilly, London, this engraving offers a correct representation of the state procession on the occasion of Queen Victoria's coronation. The intricate detail and vibrant colours bring the scene to life, transporting us back to a time of grandeur and opulence.
