EDITORS COMMENTS
This map print depicts the daring and historic voyage of Sir Francis Drake around the world, as chronicled in the book "The Queen's Pirate: The Tale of Drake's Argosy of Terror" by B.J. Clarke, illustrated by W.G. Savory. Dated back to the 16th century, this map offers a glimpse into the adventurous spirit of the Elizabethan era and the brave exploits of one of England's most legendary seafarers. Sir Francis Drake, an English privateer and naval officer, embarked on this groundbreaking journey in 1577, setting sail from Plymouth, England, with five ships under his command. His mission was to raid Spanish colonies in the Americas, plunder their riches, and establish English dominance in the New World. However, Drake's ambitions did not stop there. He decided to circumnavigate the globe, becoming the first Englishman to accomplish this feat. The map illustrates the various ports and territories Drake visited during his voyage, including Europe, Africa, and Asia. Starting from the western coast of Africa, Drake sailed eastward across the Atlantic Ocean, then rounded the treacherous Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. He continued northward along the Pacific Coast of the Americas, crossed the Pacific Ocean, and reached the eastern coast of Asia. After raiding ports in India and Indonesia, Drake sailed westward across the Indian Ocean, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and returned to England in 1580, completing the first circumnavigation of the world by an Englishman. This map print is a testament to the rich maritime history of the Elizabethan era and the remarkable achievements of Sir Francis Drake. It is an essential addition to any collection of historical maps, nautical charts, or books on exploration and adventure.
