EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving, created by Dumenil after an original illustration by Oudart for the Universal Dictionary of Natural History by Charles d'Orbigny in 1849, showcases three fascinating marine species: the Peacock Blenny, Flathead Mullet, and Black Goby. The Peacock Blenny, also known as the Three-spot Blenny or Salaria pavo, is a small, colorful fish with distinctive markings. The male is adorned with vibrant blue and orange spots, while the female is more subdued in color. They are found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas, typically hiding among rocks and corals. The Flathead Mullet, scientifically known as Mugil cephalus, is a common fish in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. It is easily recognizable by its flat, elongated head and silver-gray body. This fish is an important food source for many larger marine species and is also popular among humans for its delicious taste. The Black Goby, or Gobius niger, is a small, bottom-dwelling fish with a black body and distinctive white spots on its fins. They are found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas and are often used as bait fish. The Black Goby is an important species in the marine ecosystem, as they help control populations of other smaller fish and are an essential food source for larger predators. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricate details of these three species but also offers a glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century. The illustration and engraving process were state-of-the-art techniques at the time, allowing for accurate and detailed representations of the natural world. The hand-coloring adds an extra layer of beauty and depth to the image, making it a true work of art.
