EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's "Buch der Welt" or "Book of the World," published in Stuttgart in 1848, showcases the striking Poplar Admiral and Purple Emperor butterflies in various stages of their life cycle. The Poplar Admiral, Limenitis populi, is depicted in its adult form in the first four images. With its wingspan reaching up to 7 centimeters, this beautiful butterfly is characterized by its black wings with orange borders and distinctive white spots. The fifth image illustrates the Purple Emperor, Apatura iris, another large and vibrant butterfly, with a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters. Its wings are a deep purple color with white spots and a striking orange band along the leading edge. The remaining images in this intricately detailed print provide a glimpse into the life cycle of these fascinating creatures. The caterpillars or larvae of both species are shown in the sixth and seventh images. The Poplar Admiral caterpillar is green with a yellow stripe, while the Purple Emperor caterpillar is black with white spots and a distinctive orange collar. The final two images illustrate the pupa or chrysalis stage of the Poplar Admiral and Purple Emperor. During this stage, the butterfly undergoes a remarkable transformation, emerging from the pupa as a fully formed adult. This educational picture is a testament to the intricate beauty and complexity of the natural world, captured in exquisite detail by the skilled artisans of Carl Hoffmann's "Buch der Welt.
