EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the aftermath of the Battle of Veracruz, which took place on April 21, 1914, during the United States' occupation of the Mexican port city. American soldiers stand with rifles at the ready as the bodies of fallen revolutionary soldiers are brought and laid out before them. The Battle of Veracruz was a significant event during the Mexican Revolution, instigated by the detainment of American sailors by Mexican port authorities. The United States, under the command of General Frederick Funston, launched a military expedition to secure the release of the sailors and to protect American interests in Mexico. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, with estimates of up to 500 Mexican soldiers and 25 American soldiers killed or wounded. The image serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of the conflict between the two nations, and the complex geopolitical dynamics at play during this turbulent period in Mexican and American history.
