This poignant image captures the aftermath of the Battle of Veracruz, which took place on April 21, 1914, during the United States' occupation of the Mexican port city. American soldiers stand with rifles at the ready as the bodies of fallen revolutionary soldiers are brought and laid out before them. The Battle of Veracruz was a significant event during the Mexican Revolution, instigated by the detainment of American sailors by Mexican port authorities.
