This studio portrait captures the elegance and charisma of Lena Ashwell, an English actress, theatre manager, and producer, who left an indelible mark on the theatrical world during the late Victorian era and the early 20th century. Dressed in a stylish hat and gloves, Lena exudes an air of sophistication and confidence that belies the challenges she would later face during her illustrious career. Born in 1872, Lena Ashwell began her acting career in the late 1890s and quickly rose to prominence, gracing the stages of London's most prestigious theatres. However, her talents extended beyond the confines of the stage, and she soon became a successful theatre manager and producer. Perhaps most notably, Lena Ashwell is remembered for her pioneering efforts to provide large-scale entertainment for the troops during the First World War. In 1915, she organized the first of many shows at the Front, which featured an all-star cast and raised much-needed funds for the war effort. Her dedication to the cause earned her an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1918.
