EDITORS COMMENTS
The Glorious First of June: A Pivotal Moment in the Anglo-French Naval War of 1793-1797 This evocative print commemorates a pivotal moment in the Anglo-French Naval War of 1793-1797, which took place during the French Revolution. On the fateful day of 1 June 1794, off the coast of Ushant, France, the French fleet, under the command of Rear-Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse, was decisively defeated by the British fleet, led by Rear-Admiral Sir John Jervis, later Earl of St Vincent, and Vice-Admiral Sir Samuel Hood. The print depicts the aftermath of the battle, with the British fleet triumphantly surrounding the damaged and sinking French ships. Five French vessels are shown sinking beneath the waves, while six others are being taken into British custody. The defeat was a significant morale booster for the British, who had been on the defensive in the early stages of the war. The naval battle of Ushant was a turning point in the war, which lasted until 1797. It demonstrated the superiority of the British navy, both in terms of tactics and organization. The French fleet, which had been reorganized and expanded in response to the British threat, was unable to match the British in this engagement. The print serves as a reminder of the fierce naval battles that took place during the French Revolution and the impact they had on the course of European history. It is a testament to the bravery and skill of the sailors on both sides, who risked their lives in the pursuit of victory on the high seas.
