On the fateful day of 1 June 1794, off the coast of Ushant, France, the French fleet, under the command of Rear-Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse, was decisively defeated by the British fleet, led by Rear-Admiral Sir John Jervis, later Earl of St Vincent, and Vice-Admiral Sir Samuel Hood. The print depicts the aftermath of the battle, with the British fleet triumphantly surrounding the damaged and sinking French ships. Five French vessels are shown sinking beneath the waves, while six others are being taken into British custody. The defeat was a significant morale booster for the British, who had been on the defensive in the early stages of the war.
