EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the moment of public humiliation and condemnation endured by Titus Oates, a notorious English clergyman and convicted liar, in 1705. Oates, born in 1649, became infamous for his role in the Popish Plot, a fabricated conspiracy alleging a Catholic plot to assassinate King Charles II. The plot, which gained widespread attention and sparked anti-Catholic sentiment, was exposed as a hoax, and Oates was subsequently brought to trial and found guilty of perjury. As seen in this photograph from Mary Evans Prints Online, Oates was punished by being placed in the pillory at the gate of Westminster Hall, now known as New Palace Yard, in London. The pillory, a common form of public punishment during this period, was a wooden frame with holes for the head and hands, designed to expose the offender to the jeers and missiles of passers-by. In this case, the crowd, likely fueled by anti-Catholic sentiments and anger towards Oates' deceit, pelted him with eggs. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of false accusations and the power of public opinion in shaping the course of history.
