EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork depicts two variants of the New Zealand Fantail, or Piwakawaka (Rhipidura fuliginosa), with the melanistic variety on the left. The New Zealand Fantail is a small, agile bird endemic to New Zealand and is known for its distinctive long, graduated tail and habit of flying sideways and upside down. The artwork is taken from Sir Walter Lawry Buller's seminal work, "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," published in 1888. The work was illustrated by the renowned Dutch natural history artist, John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912). Keulemans was a prolific artist and illustrator, producing over 1,500 plates for various natural history works. His meticulous attention to detail and lifelike depictions of birds made his illustrations highly sought after by collectors and scientists alike. The New Zealand Fantail is a passerine bird belonging to the family Rhipiduridae. It is found throughout New Zealand, including offshore islands, and is a common sight in forests, gardens, and wetlands. The melanistic variant, depicted on the left of the artwork, is a rare and fascinating variation of the species. Its dark plumage sets it apart from the more commonly seen grey and brown variants. The artwork itself is a beautiful example of the watercolor technique, with intricate details and vibrant colors that bring the birds to life. The background, featuring lush vegetation and a serene water scene, adds to the overall sense of tranquility and beauty. This artwork is not only a testament to the natural history of New Zealand but also a stunning work of art in its own right.
