This evocative photograph captures the rear entrance to No. 1 War Hospital in Reading, Berkshire, during the First World War. The imposing building, which once served as the Reading Union Workhouse on Oxford Road, has been repurposed to provide vital medical care for the wounded soldiers returning from the battlefields. The image shows several uniformed soldiers, one of whom is using crutches, making their way into the hospital. The Guardians boardroom, now a secondary entrance, can be seen on the right-hand side of the photograph. Parked vehicles line the driveway to the left, suggesting the steady stream of patients being transported to the hospital for treatment.
