EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Vol.3, showcases the North Island Weka (Gallirallus australis greyi) and Western Weka (Gallirallus australis australis). The North Island Weka, also known as the North Island Brown Kiwi, is native to the North Island of New Zealand and is distinguished by its lighter plumage with darker bars and spots. In contrast, the Western Weka, or the South Island Brown Kiwi, is native to the South Island and Stewart Island and has a darker, more uniform brown coloration. Both species of Weka are flightless, ground-dwelling birds belonging to the Rallidae family, order Gruiformes, and class Sauropsida. They are omnivorous and feed on a variety of vegetation, insects, and invertebrates. Weka were once abundant throughout New Zealand, but their populations have declined significantly due to habitat loss, predation by introduced species, and human disturbance. Keulemans' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate feather patterns and textures of the Weka's plumage, as well as the lifelike depiction of their expressive faces and postures. This artwork is a testament to the natural beauty and diversity of New Zealand's avian fauna and serves as an important historical record of these unique birds. The painting also highlights the significant contributions of Buller and Keulemans to the scientific study and documentation of New Zealand's birds during the late 19th century.
