EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: This striking cover image from The Illustrated London News depicts the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, embarking on a tour of the mining industries in the west of Britain during February 1918. In the top left photograph, the future monarch is seen paying a visit to the Kit Hill mine in Cornwall, where he donned traditional miner's attire, including overalls and a miner's hat with a candle attached, before entering an underground cutting. The bottom left image captures the Prince's visit to the Victoria coal mine, where he descended into the depths dressed in brown overalls and a cap, cutting away a piece of steam coal as a memento. These visits were significant moments in the Prince's public engagements, as he sought to connect with the working-class communities and gain a deeper understanding of the mining industries that played a crucial role in the country's economy. The Prince's visits to Cornwall, specifically to the mining towns of South Callington, Gunnislake, and Kit Hill, showcased his commitment to engaging with the people and industries that shaped the region. This historical photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the Prince's role as the heir to the throne and his efforts to connect with the working class during a time of great change and upheaval in British history.
