This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving showcases two stunning hummingbird species, the Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) and the Black-throated Mango Hummingbird (Anthracothorax mango). The image is taken from H.G. Adams' seminal work, "Hummingbirds," published in London in 1856. The Rufous Hummingbird, also known as the Rufous-necked Hummingbird or the Nootka Hummingbird, is depicted on the left. Males of this species are characterized by their vibrant rufous (reddish-brown) necks, which contrast sharply with their emerald green backs and iridescent throats. They are native to North America, ranging from Alaska to Panama, and are known for their long-distance migration. On the right, the Black-throated Mango Hummingbird is depicted. This hummingbird species is native to Central and South America, and is easily identified by its black throat, which is bordered by a narrow, white band. The male's body is a brilliant green color, while the female is more subdued, with a duller green back and a white belly.
