1. Title: "Saint Isberga, the Legendary Sister of Emperor Charlemagne, Circa 800" Saint Isberga, also known as Itisberga, Isbergue, or Isidora, is a legendary figure in European history, renowned for her piety and miraculous powers. This evocative image, believed to date from around 800 AD, depicts the saint in the prime of her life, holding an eel. Isberga was the sister of the renowned Emperor Charlemagne, who ruled the Frankish Empire from 768 to 814 AD. Although her life story is shrouded in myth and legend, it is said that she lived an ascetic life, dedicating herself to prayer and good works. Her association with eels is a fascinating aspect of her legend. According to one popular tale, Isberga was once approached by a group of fishermen who had caught an unusually large eel in their nets. Unable to pull it in, they sought the saint's help. With a single prayer, she miraculously drew the eel to the shore, where she blessed it before releasing it back into the water. The grateful fishermen then built a chapel in her honor at the site of the miraculous event. In this image, Saint Isberga is depicted in the act of holding the eel, her pious expression and serene demeanor reflecting her deep connection to the natural world and her unwavering faith. The eel, symbolizing renewal and transformation, serves as a reminder of the power and mystery of the divine. This print, with its rich historical significance and intriguing narrative, offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of medieval Europe and the enduring legacy of its saints.
