EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894): A Distinguished English Traveller, Archaeologist, and Politician of the 19th Century This portrait depicts Sir Austen Henry Layard, an Englishman of great distinction who made significant contributions to archaeology, politics, and diplomacy during the 19th century. Born in 1817, Layard is best known for his groundbreaking archaeological discoveries in the Middle East, particularly at Nimrud and Nineveh in modern-day Iraq. His findings, which included the famous Assyrian Lion Hunt Stele and the Royal Palace of Sargon II, revolutionized the understanding of ancient civilizations and paved the way for further exploration and research. Layard's accomplishments extended beyond archaeology. He was an accomplished author, publishing several books on his travels and discoveries, as well as a diplomat and statesman. In 1853, he was appointed as the British Consul in Eastern Arabia, a position that allowed him to further explore the region and strengthen diplomatic relations between Britain and the Middle East. As a liberal politician, Layard was a member of the British Parliament from 1868 to 1892, representing the constituency of Southwark. His political career was marked by his advocacy for reforms and his commitment to the welfare of the British people. Despite his advanced age, Layard remained an active and influential figure in British politics until his death in 1894. This engraving, published in The Universal History in 1892, captures the elderly Layard with a full beard, reflecting the wisdom and experience that came with his many years of exploration, discovery, and public service. The portrait is a testament to Layard's remarkable life and the enduring impact he had on both archaeology and British politics during the Victorian era.
