EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph depicts the male Sylvilagus aquaticus, also known as the swamp rabbit or Bachman's rabbit, as illustrated in Plate 37 of "The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America," Volume 1, published in 1845. The work was created by the renowned naturalist and artist duo, John James Audubon (1785-1851) and John Bachman (1790-1874). The swamp rabbit is a unique species of cottontail rabbit native to the southeastern United States. The illustration captures the male rabbit in its natural habitat, standing alert and observant in a marshy environment. The swamp rabbit is well adapted to its wetland surroundings, with its long, powerful hind legs and broad, webbed hind feet, which enable it to swim and navigate through the water with ease. The rabbit's coat is a rich, chestnut brown color with white underparts, providing excellent camouflage in its environment. John Bachman, a native of South Carolina, was an accomplished naturalist and clergyman who made significant contributions to the scientific community during the 19th century. He collaborated with Audubon on several projects, including the publication of "The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America." Bachman's expertise in the natural history of the southeastern United States was invaluable to Audubon, who sought to accurately depict the region's diverse wildlife in his artwork. The swamp rabbit is a member of the order Lagomorpha, which includes rabbits and hares, and the family Leporidae. It is classified as an even-toed ungulate, along with deer, bucks, and other mammals in the orders Artiodactyla, Cervidae, and Cetacea. The swamp rabbit is an eutherian mammal, meaning it gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the remarkable collaboration between Audubon and Bachman, and their dedication to documenting the natural world around them. It remains an important historical and artistic record of the swamp rabbit and its habitat.
