EDITORS COMMENTS
Two intrepid workmen, Stan Strowbridge (left) and Syd Edmonds (right), pause at the construction site of Baden Powell House in South Kensington, London, to study an architectural plan. The year is 1960, and the men, both ex-Scouts and ex-Boys Brigade members, are deeply engaged in bringing the vision for this new building to life. Stan, a Foreman Carpenter from the 12th Hammersmith Scouts, and Syd, the General Foreman from the Boys Brigade in Stockwell, are dressed in shirtsleeves and ties, with the ever-present pipe in Syd's hand adding an air of authority. The site, which was acquired in 1956, had been entrusted to Ralph Tubbs, a renowned architect, who was tasked with designing a building that would become a fitting tribute to the Scouting and Guiding movement. The foundation stone was laid by Lady Olave Baden Powell in 1959, and the building was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1961. Baden Powell House, located at Queens Gate, would go on to receive numerous awards for its innovative design and construction. Today, it continues to serve as a vital scouting hostel and conference venue, providing a space for young people to learn, grow, and build their own futures. This photograph captures a moment in time, as these two dedicated workmen, with their combined expertise and passion, contribute to the creation of a lasting legacy.
