EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming print from 1989, we see a group of cheeky Brownies waylaying Peter Boswell in Moldgreen. It was the first day of Brownie smile week, and these girls couldn't resist giving his shoes a quick brush up. The girls belonged to Huddersfield's Ramsden division and were at Mandela corner as part of the Brownies' 75th anniversary celebrations. The purpose of their presence went beyond celebration; they also aimed to recruit more members. Organiser Mrs. Christine Bottom expressed concern about declining membership in packs located in Fartown and Birkby. This snapshot captures an era when organizations like the Brownies played a significant role in shaping young girls' lives. The image reflects the values instilled by such groups - discipline, community service, and camaraderie. The uniforms worn by these enthusiastic youngsters are reminiscent of simpler times when dressing alike fostered unity among peers. This photograph serves as a reminder that even small gestures like shining someone's shoes can bring joy and create lasting memories. As we look back on this nostalgic moment from our yesterdays, it is evident that the spirit of youthfulness and dedication still shines bright within these Brownies. Their commitment to spreading smiles through acts of kindness continues to inspire us today.
