Visit London in Coronation Year, BR poster, 1953

Poster produced for British Railways (BR) promoting London as a place to visit in the year of Queen Elizabeth IIs coronation. The poster shows a procession of the Queens Guard on horseback, leaving Buckingham Palace (which is shown in the background along with the Victoria Monument) to travel down The Mall. Artwork by Gordon Nicoll, who studied at Southampton Art School and at Hornsey under Frank Hillyard Swinstead. He was a member of the London Sketch Club. A landscape painter in watercolour and oil, he designed posters for the London North & Eastern Raliway (LNER), including a memorable series on railway hotels
