Original oil painting by Norman Wilkinson for a London Midland & Scottish Railway poster. Many British railway companies also operated ferry services. Wilkinson was commissioned by several of the companies to produce artwork for use in posters promoting their services. The London Midland & Scottish Railway Company (LMS) was formed in 1923. It operated ferry services across the Irish Sea on routes between Holyhead and Dublin, and Heysham and Belfast. In 1948 all the private railway companies shipping fleets were nationalised, becoming part of the British Transport Commission

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an original oil painting by the talented artist Norman Wilkinson, commissioned for a London Midland & Scottish Railway poster titled "Heysham for Ulster, 1928-1948". The artwork beautifully captures the essence of this historical period and highlights the significant role that British railway companies played in operating ferry services. During its existence from 1923 to 1948, the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company (LMS) operated ferry services across the Irish Sea on two crucial routes: Holyhead to Dublin and Heysham to Belfast. This particular painting focuses on the latter route, showcasing the picturesque port town of Heysham as a gateway to Ulster. Wilkinson's artistic prowess shines through in this piece as he expertly portrays the tranquil beauty of Heysham against a backdrop of rolling hills and serene waters. The attention to detail is remarkable, capturing every nuance of color and texture with precision. It is worth noting that in 1948, all private railway companies' shipping fleets were nationalized under the British Transport Commission. This marked a significant turning point in transportation history but does not detract from appreciating this stunning artwork. The National Railway Museum proudly presents this print from their Pictorial Collection, allowing us to admire Wilkinson's masterpiece while also reflecting upon an era when rail travel and ferry services united nations and facilitated journeys across vast bodies of water.
