EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the front view of Henry Martin's home, known as "Woodbury" located at Woodbury Point on the picturesque River Fal in Kea, Cornwall. The photograph dates back to the early 1900s and was captured by renowned photographer Arthur Philp. It is worth noting that the original glass plate negative spelled the name of this remarkable residence as "Woodberry". However, historical records confirm its correct spelling as "Woodbury". Henry Martin, born on February 18th, 1981, in Truro, Cornwall, led a fascinating life as an Anglican priest and missionary. Educated at Truro Grammar School and St John's College in Cambridge, he later became a chaplain for the British East India Company. His dedication to his work saw him translating significant religious texts into various languages such as Urdu, Persian, and Judaeo-Persic. Among his notable translations were the entire New Testament into these languages along with rendering Psalms into Persian and adapting the Book of Common Prayer into Urdu. This image not only captures a glimpse of Henry Martin's beautiful abode but also serves as a window into Victorian and Edwardian-era architecture prevalent in Cornwall during that time. The serene backdrop of Woodbury Point against the tranquil River Fal adds further charm to this historic photograph from Royal Cornwall Museum's collection.
