Coombe, Cowlands Creek, Kea, Cornwall. Between 1908 and 1924

A view of the Reading Room and cottages at Coombe, on Cowlands Creek. A lady looks out from the front door of Holly Cottage. The Reading Room, the timber building with a corrugated galvanised steel roof, was built in 1908 and looks recently constructed. The newspapers for the Reading Room were provided by Miss Daubuz of Killiow Estate. The two thatched cottages to the left of Holly Cottage, Moor Close and Bunny Thatch, were demolished between the First and Second World Wars. The photograph was taken before construction of the road in 1924. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the peaceful hamlet of Coombe, nestled along Cowlands Creek in Kea, Cornwall. The scene captures the essence of a bygone era between 1908 and 1924. In the foreground stands Holly Cottage, its front door open as a lady gazes out onto the tranquil surroundings. To the right, we see the newly constructed Reading Room, an inviting timber building with a corrugated galvanised steel roof. This community hub was established in 1908 and provided newspapers for locals courtesy of Miss Daubuz from Killiow Estate. To the left of Holly Cottage once stood two charming thatched cottages named Moor Close and Bunny Thatch. Sadly, these quaint dwellings were demolished during the tumultuous period between World War I and II. The photograph offers us a glimpse into daily life before significant changes took place in Coombe. It predates the construction of a road that would forever alter this serene landscape in 1924. Through this lens captured by photographer Arthur William Jordan, we are transported to an idyllic time when Victorian and Edwardian influences still shaped society. The image evokes feelings of nostalgia for simpler times spent along riverside communities like Truro and Fal
