EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the summer of 1893 in Truro, Cornwall. The image showcases a Pilchard seine boat gracefully floating on the River Kenwyn at Back Quay. In the background, we catch a glimpse of Samuel Brokenshire's carriage factory, adding an industrial touch to this picturesque scene. The quay is bustling with activity as numerous carts and carriages are parked along its edges. It appears that some onlookers, possibly workers from the factory, have gathered to witness this momentous occasion. Their curious gazes hint at their admiration for both the boat and its skilled craftsmen. Samuel Brokenshire himself was not only a coach builder but also a shoeing smith, as noted in Kellys Directory of 1889. His establishment was located at Back Quay, Royal Hotel Yard in Truro. This particular photograph is part of a series of glass lantern slides documenting the Fisheries Exhibition held during July and August 1893. The main exhibition site was situated in a field atop Lemon Street and lasted for an entire month. Transport yourself back in time with this remarkable snapshot capturing Victorian-era fishing traditions intertwined with commerce and local occupations in beautiful Cornwall County.
