EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a bustling city scene in late Victorian Cornwall. The focal point is Silvanus Trevails post office, an architectural masterpiece designed by the renowned Cornish architect himself. Built in 1886, this iconic building stood proudly on the corner of High Cross and Pydar Street in Truro until its unfortunate demolition in 1974. The photograph, taken from King Street, offers a glimpse into the vibrant street life of that era. Adjacent to the post office stands Argalls photographic shop, while J. Osborne's Tailors and Hatters occupies the right-hand side of the frame. Tonkin Brothers' establishment can be seen on the left with barrels stacked up outside their premises. Intriguingly, behind Silvanus Trevails post office looms Passmore Edwards library—a testament to Cornwall's commitment to education and culture even during those times. As we delve deeper into this snapshot of history, it becomes evident that numerous people populate these streets—each one with their own story to tell. They traverse through daily routines or perhaps engage in lively conversations amidst a backdrop of charming shops and establishments. Although captured by an unknown photographer, this image serves as a time capsule transporting us back to early 1900s Cornwall—an enchanting moment frozen forever within its delicate frames.
